Horror Movie News: Stephen King's Carrie to be turned into a series by Mike Flanagan. King's Fairy Tale in the works.
Following his departure from Netflix, Mike Flanagan has now signed a deal with Amazon to produce shows for the streaming platform.
While the horror maestro has always been interested in adapting Stephen King’s DARK TOWER series, due to budget constraints, and the fact that the series contains 8 novels, Mike Flanagan had to put the series on pause.
It has now been reported that the novel that made Stephen King’s name a brand in the horror genre, is now being adapted in a TV series.
Yes, after four movies, two broadway plays, and a TV special, CARRIE is yet again going to be adapted, this time by Mike Flanagan for Amazon MGM Studios.
The series will consist eight episodes and will stream on Amazon. Mike Flanagan had previously adapted three of Stephen King’s books: Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep, and The Life of Chuck.
All three movies have garnered positive reviews with the latest, The Life of Chuck, even receive the People’s Choice Award.
Mike Flanagan is known for his unique take on storytelling and relying less on jump scares in horror movies. It’s no surprise that even Stephen King is a fan of Mike Flanagan’s take on horror.
The new adaptation has entered the writing process and there is yet to be a cast announced. The project may either release in late 2025 or 2026.
In other news, another one of Stephen King’s novels is in the works. Published in 2022, FAIRY TALE was Stephen King’s first dark fantasy tale. While the prolific author has dabbled with the fantasy genre in his previous books, it has always been under the horror category.
Fairy Tale was about a boy called Charlie Reade who ends up taking care of his neighbors dog when his neighbor Howard Bowditch is injured. Charlie develops an attachment to the dog Radar, and also learns peculiar things about Howard, especially his unique payment method of using gold pellets.
After the neighbor dies, he leaves behind a recorded message, telling Charlie the truth about himself. Turns out that Howard is 120 years old, and that there is a portal in his shed that leads to another world where a magical sundial is the secret to his longevity.
Charlie realizes that Radar may die too if he doesn’t do something about it, and so travels through the portal to find the magical sundial. However, Charlie soon finds himself in a battle between good and evil.
The story is told in more than 600 pages, and clearly would not have been easy to condense in a movie which is why A24 has now taken the rights to develop this tale into a TV series.
The TV series will contain ten episodes and will have J.H. Wyman as a showrunner. No cast has been announced yet nor a tentative release date has been given.
