Evil Dead Rise (2023)-- Movie Spoilers and Ending Explained

Plot: When Danny finds a book, he unknowingly unleashes evil that targets his mother.

What would you do if you find a hole after an earthquake? Would you wander down with no regard to the fact that there might be an aftershock and you may be buried under rocks?

And once you go down this hole and find a book that looks like a bear trap but with pointy teeth, do you pick it up and immediately try to read from it. Or would you look at it and think, nope, not worth releasing demons into this world.

We have enough issues to deal with as it is.

Evil Dead Rise is a highly entertaining movie and a treat for the fans of the franchise. There is copious amounts of blood flowing.

The only thing that sticks out in the story is a young man entering a  hole literally minutes after an earthquake that ripped open the land. And he thinks it's a good idea to pick up whatever he finds, all the creepy stuff, and bring it home.

Although his intentions were to sell these "collectables," the fact that he opened a book after seeing the blood being absorbed by it was just odd.

EVIL DEAD RISE Plot

The movie opens with a girl called Teresa. She is sitting by the lake when a guy with a drone, Caleb, comes over.

Teresa goes to check up on her friend Jessica, who is sitting on her bed. To amuse her, she begins to read Wuthering Heights.

Suddenly, Jessica falls sideways and speaks in a different voice.

Teresa goes over to her, and Jessica tells her how much she hates her ponytail and pulls it off with so much force. Her scalp comes off.

Caleb is still playing with his drone when a bloodied Teresa goes over to him, and he is shocked to see her. Jessica follows and drops the ripped scalp and annoying ponytail on the docks before grabbing the flying drone and cutting her face with it. Then, she jumps into the water.

Caleb, ignoring what happened to Teresa and what Jessica did, jumps into the lake to save her. Teresa awaits in suspense when a head is thrown at her. It is Caleb's.

Jessica gets hovering powers as she rises from the water. The title of the movie comes up behind her.

We are then taken a day earlier, where we see Beth sitting on the toilet and taking a pregnancy test. What she sees doesn't please her.

We then meet Ellie, who is a tattoo artist working at home. Her youngest daughter, Kassie, is busy chopping off doll heads and sticking them on sticks to make Staffini. Bridget is an activist who is busy making 'KEEP EARTH COOL'  posters while Danny is busy trying to be a DJ.

Bridget complains to Ellie about Kassie dismembering dolls, but she is hardly bothered. She hasn't even gotten to do the laundry yet.

A knock on the door shows us two neighbours, Jake and Scott, who want to invite Bridget over to watch horror movies. Bridget is barely interested and slams the door on their disappointed faces.

Next, it is Beth who shows up. Ellie is her sister and unaware of what she has gone through the past few months. While everyone gets presents, Beth warns Ellie to be nice or she won't get hers.

Ellie sends her kids to get pizzas and off they go. She then tells her sister that while Beth was touring with her band, Ellie's husband had walked out of the family. Ellie had tried to call Beth but didn't receive a callback.

Beth feels bad but then later tells her sister that she has always been there for her and needs Ellie's help to fix things for her because she screwed up again.

Let's assume this is about Beth's pregnancy.

The kids are parking their car and have come back with three large boxes of pizzas and large sodas. Just then, an earthquake hits, and everyone runs for cover.

When it ends, Ellie tries to call up her kids and asks her neighbors to help and drive around to search for them.

Meanwhile, Danny notices a hole in the road and decides he must simply investigate what's under there. He jumps down and finds some old vinyl records and a creepy looking book.

They go upstairs just as Ellie is about to leave with her neighbour. She chides the kids for using the elevator after an earthquake but hugs them.

Inside the house, everyone barely gets any dinner because the pizza was spoiled.

Danny obsesses over the book, and Bridget tells him it was a bad idea to loot a hole. He tries to open the book, which uses teeth as a lock. He accidentally cuts his finger, and a few drops of blood fall onto it. The drops are absorbed, and the book pops open.

Danny isn't bothered that the book requires a blood sacrifice. He wants to know what is inside. There are morbid pictures inside, and Bridget tells him to never touch the book again and just sell it off if he wants to help with finances.

Danny "promises," and then as soon as his sister leaves, he begins to study it properly. The vinyls have incantations from a priest as well as the description of the Necronomicon.

Ellie finally decides to do the laundry right after the earthquake and decides to take the elevator because nothing bad is going to happen.

Unfortunately, Ellie is about to have the worst night of her life. She is suddenly thrust up to the roof of the elevator, and as the cables snap, they tie her up in an awkward, painful looking position.

You will actually find yourself feeling sorry for Ellie.

That's the power of good writing and direction. Within a few minutes, you actually have bonded with this family, and so you're going to feel so bad as the night pans out.

The others are wondering where Ellie is when they finally hear her in the kitchen.

Like a good mother who has realized her kids have not eaten properly, she's preparing them a healthy meal, right?

Except, she's just cracking eggs and throwing them into a pan, with the shells also. Some of the eggs seemed to be filled with eggs.

Ellie talks about her dream where she tore apart her family's bodies and wanted to crawl inside them.

This horrifies the family, who then run back when Ellie crawls after them.

She then proceeds to cover the floor with white, sudsy vomit. Then she looks at Beth and pleads with her not to let it take her kids. Then she falls face down on the vomit.

Beth asks the neighbours to help, who put Ellie on a bed and wonder what happened to her face. They manage to close her eyes with great difficulty. One of them wants to say a prayer, and Beth tells them her sister was never religious. The neighbour doesn't care and starts the prayer. Beth joins in.

Danny is guilt-ridden, and his sisters are grieving and wondering how their night took a worse turn.

Beth is sitting by her sister and expressing her regrets when Ellie opens her eyes and sits up. Beth is shocked, yet happy that her sister is back. Except she is burning up. The kids come too and spring into action to throw their mother into a bathtub.

While the others go get other things, Ellie looks at Danny as he apologizes. She then tells him his mother isn't here but with the maggots. So, are the maggots inside her? Because if she isn't buried yet, the maggots are not squirming in her decayed corpse yet.

Ellie then jumps on the ceiling like a spider, and when the others gather, she utters a shriek. She pounces on everyone and begins attacking them.

They all get into a scuffle that leads to Ellie using her tattoo pen on Bridget's face. Danny comes over to push her off, and then the power goes off.

It's time for the side characters to meet their demise one by one. All the neighbours we've met so far and killed in gory ways.

In one scene, Ellie bites out an eye of one neighbour and throws it into the open, shocked mouth of another neighbour who chokes on the eyeball. The other neighbours on the floor are killed too, so now we can only focus on the family.

Bridget is tending to her wounds but notices gross, black goo oozing out of her. Soon, it begins to spread and take over her. She then pukes. Uh oh...

Meanwhile, Ellie is sitting quietly, and Kassie goes to check up on her mom. Ellie gets up and asks Kassie to open the door. Before she can harm Kassie, Danny and Beth come at the right moment and lock Ellie outside.

Beth goes in search of Bridget and finds her niece sitting in a corner and snacking.

Except it isn't an ordinary snack. It's a wine glass, but Bridget is enjoying every mouthful. There's even a close-up of a glass shard pushing against her throat. But that isn't the stomach churning scene that has everyone talking about it online.

It's when Bridget and Beth get into a scuffle, and as Beth tries to get away, Bridget uses the grater on her leg. That scene will make you wince. Ouch!

Danny and Kassie join in, too, with Kassie finally putting her Staffini to good use. Bridget is impaled on it, and everyone assumes she is dead.

Danny doesn't think so and ties her up on the bed. He then shows Beth his loot of a fanged book and vinyls full of incantations. Beth sits down to listen to it on headphones while utter chaos takes place.

Ellie manages to make her way inside while Bridget comes to life and goes after Danny. Beth, in the meantime, hears that the priest had to kill several of his men who got possessed and, when they wouldn't stay down, had to dismember him.

She finally hears cries and finds Ellie inside. Bridget and Danny are still scuffling when she stabs him. The deadites that are possessing Ellie and Bridget realise Beth is pregnant and is pleased to take two lives at once. Kassie comes to the rescue this time.

Since Danny is dead, Beth takes Kassie with her and makes a run for it. They can't take the stairs because they were destroyed during the earthquake. The rest of the neighbours are possessed at this point and chase Beth and Kassie.

Beth manages to use a gun on Ellie and shoot her limbs off. Ellie isn't bothered because she has her kids now. The three merge into a gross spider monster while Beth manages to climb down to the parking lot.

EVIL DEAD RISE Ending Explained

Beth gets into the car with Kassie, but the car ends up stuck in a pothole. They try to hide when the spider monster thing comes after them but they are detected.

The monster goes after Kassie because she's the only kid left. As they are about to decapitate her with a Chainsaw, Beth comes with a shotgun and manages to startle them.

Furious, the spider monster turns on the wood chipper and tries to pull Beth in. Kassie manages to recover and turn it off just as Beth's boot touches it.

Beth manages to grab hold of the Chainsaw and use it on the monster, tearing them apart and pushing them into the machine so that they can be nicely dismembered.

She then takes Kassie out of the building. She managed to keep one -third of her promise to Ellie.

Later, we see Jessica walking into the parking lot, chatting on her phone, and unaware of the blood bath behind her.

She gets into her car, and we see her friend Teresa tying up her hair that is going to be torn off in a few minutes.

Jessica finally spots the blood splatters on the car and gets out to inspect. When she sees the scene of the crime, she starts to make a call when she is attacked.

So that's how she got possessed.

The movie ends.

EVIL DEAD RISE is entertaining, gory, and thrilling. Solid writing makes you sympathize with the family and keep you hooked right till the very end.

There's never a dull moment in Evil Dead Rise.
