Blackwater Lane-- My take on the movie with spoilers!
Plot: Cass thinks she has driven past a dead driver. Soon enough, she begins to suspect she may be the next victim.
Blackwater Lane is one of those movies that plays like a really bad TV movie. The acting is bland and awkward. The plot barely holds together and you may just guess what is going on way before the anticlimactic reveal.
It doesn't help that the poster is as dull as can be. But for the first time, the poster manages to exactly capture the general theme of the movie.
Blackwater Lane is a drab mystery that you may just give it a try because of the actors.
BLACKWATER LANE Plot
Cass and Matthew have just moved into a mansion in the countryside. The house is known as the Crawford House and is supposedly haunted. Don't worry, the movie is not even close to being in the horror genre. It can be labeled as a sleepy thriller at best.
Cass is a teacher and is listening to her students' essays. After class, one of the students, Andrew, comes to talk to her and remarks on her having a lack of British accent. He also wants to know more about her husband and she shuts him down.
Outside, her colleague John, is waiting for her and makes small talk about a party. Clearly, the guy has a thing for Cass by the looks of it. Cass then takes the road less traveled, one that cuts through the woods. It's rainy and dark.
Cass finds a car on the side of the road and drives past it. She sees the driver leaning against the window, and not moving. Cass wonders about her as she drives away.
The next morning, her husband Matthew is in the kitchen and watching the news. He remarks about a murder that took place at Blackwater Lane. Cass realizes that her assumption is right. The woman she had driven past was dead.
She will keep reliving the moment several times in the movie. We literally get to see that flashback repeated after every scene or two.
She then thanks Matthew for the breakfast we never get to see and heads out to meet her friend Rachel.
Rachel doesn't seem to like Matthew much and asks Cass if she will ever get back to acting like she did in college. Cass remarks that she did receive a call to audition but she and Matthew are planning to have a baby so she has to decline.
While they are walking, Rachel mentions Susie's birthday and how she and the other friends pooled their money to buy some luggage for their friend's trip.
Cass is confused because she doesn't remember any of that happening. She makes a clumsy attempt to mask the fact that she doesn't have any memory of getting any money from her friends.
At home, Cass sees a man standing in the garden. Matthew sneaks up on her and the second she turns away, the man is gone. Matthew thinks she is hallucinating which annoys Cass.
At the party, everyone wants to talk about the murder. Rachel remarks that the woman was called Jane and that she worked in her company. When they reach home, Cass receives a call but the other end is garbled noise.
From then on, Cass experiences weird happenings mostly a shadow around her, a bathtub drowning incident, and more phone calls where no one speaks properly on the other side.
Cass begins to suspect that her mother is trying to contact her from the other side.
Her mother had dementia and it doesn't help that Cass is becoming more and more forgetful.
She forgets she signed the contract for the alarm system. She forgets she bought a prom and hinted at the possibility of being pregnant.
Matthew is growing more and more concerned with her forgetfulness and her irritability.
Cass also inspects the murder site at some point and finds her earrings. There's also a detective on the case but she isn't getting ahead with her investigation and is more concerned that Cass and Matthew sometimes sleep in separate rooms because of a snoring issue.
Cass meets with John too and she tells him that her student, Andrew, may have a crush on her because he returned the book she gave him and waved her from afar. She suspects Andrew of giving her missed calls. Even John doesn't think that's enough proof to accuse a student of having a crush on his teacher.
Nevertheless, John tries to kiss Cass who backs away immediately. They part with John safely back in the friend zone.
After Cass exhibits several instances of forgetfulness, especially after she calls the police on a car that she thinks ran her off the road, Matthew convinces her to see a doctor.
The doctor reveals that she is showing early signs of dementia and prescribes several medicines for her. Cass is upset while Matthew slithers away thinking she's better off alone at this moment.
Cass has more episodes where she becomes sleepy, has a breakdown when someone calls, and then wakes up in the hospital after overdosing.
The detective comes to see Cass at one point and Cass gives her the earring she found at the crime site, saying that it belongs to her but she has no memory of being there.
The detective remarks about a lavish house and how Matthew has to occasionally travel to overlook a rig.
Cass laughs at that and reveals that the house belongs to her family and not Matthew. The detective brings up the name Crawford and the fact that her friend's middle name is Crawford.
Cass tells her that it did belong to Rachel but her family lost everything and Cass' family bought it. After they passed, it all went to Cass.
By now you would have guessed what is going on with this piece of information.
BLACKWATER LANE Ending Explained with Spoilers!
Cass is having lunch with Rachel but finds her friend's behavior odd. Suspecting her of having an affair, she checks her phone when Rachel goes to the bathroom.
Cass is shocked to find her friend using a flip phone and several messages from...Matthew.
Depressed by her husband's affair and her ongoing battle with dementia, she tries to commit suicide.
Later, when Matthew returns home, Andrew tells him that he saw Cass passed out and took her to the hospital. Matthew hurries away but later we see him with Rachel looking about the house for the murder weapon.
They had been using the knife they killed Jane with to torment Cass. That is when John jumps out of nowhere and attacks Matthew.
Rachel comes in to help and knocks him out. Cass was in the house all along and is caught by Rachel. The two tie up Cass and tell her how they had orchestrated the whole plan.
Rachel and Matthew were already in a relationship. She despised Cass inheriting her family home and resented her for not helping her family with financial issues. Cass objects that her mother had tried to help but Rachel isn't interested in listening to excuses.
Rachel purposely brought Matthew in Cass' life so they could get married and after her death, the property would come to him. Rachel and Matthew were continuing their affair behind her back but were caught by Jane.
And so of course, poor Jane had to die. Later, Rachel tried to frame Cass for it by chucking her earring at the crime site.
Rachel now wants to kill Cass but Matthew decides to be a hero, sort of. Rachel stabs him and he collapses.
The police then enter and having heard Rachel, arrest her.
Later, Cass reveals to Jane's husband how she caught on to the plan. A flashback shows that she had found the camera in her lamp and knew she was being watched.
She then got the detectives, John and Andrew to play their parts so that they could catch Matthew and Rachel red-handed.
The movie ends.
Blackwater Lane tries to be a sophisticated and crafty thriller but manages to keep your attention only in the first half. After that, you will find yourself getting bored and waiting for the movie to end.
Or you may just turn off the movie in the middle.
