Oddity--My take on the movie with spoilers

Plot: A blind psychic tries to uncover the truth behind her sister's murder.

Quick Movie Review

The year 2024 may have begun with tepid horror movies, but it has managed to redeem itself with some of the best horror movies to come out in a long time.

After Late Night With The Devil and Longlegs, Oddity belongs in the category of horror movies you should definitely check out.

Oddity is replete with unique storytelling and interesting characters that hold your interest for a long time. The movie doesn't rely constantly on jump scares but creates an atmosphere of tension and fear.

It's one of those movies that will stay with you for a long time, whether or not you like it.

ODDITY Movie Plot Summary

It's nighttime, and Dani, who is a photographer, has her camera set up to take photos.

The camera takes a photo when Dani moves but also when she doesn't. Could it be that it senses someone who is not entirely visible to us?

Dani searches for her phone and goes out to look for it in her car. She returns, having still not found it, and hears a knock on the door. She uses the slider on the door to look out and sees a man with one glass eye and long hair. He is Olin, one of Dani's husband Ted's patients.

Dani is taken aback when she sees him and even more so when he reveals that while Dani was outside, a man slipped inside her house. Of course, Dani doesn't believe him. He was a mental patient, after all. She tells him her husband is going to return soon, but he knows Ted works nights. Dani is still unsure and threatens to call the police. Olin tells her Good, call the police.

Dani now starts to trust him a bit. If he wants her to call the police, then he couldn't be actually lying, could he?

She tells him she can't find her phone. Olin looks troubled since he doesn't as well. He still wants to help her and Dani has to make the decision to open the door.

The scene cuts to some time later.

We meet Darcy, Dani's twin sister, who has white hair and is blind. She runs an antiques store and sells oddities. She is also a psychic.

She is sitting on a chai,r and her hand is hovering above a call bell when Ted enters. He pretends to be a customer,r and it takes Darcy some time to guess who it is. But once she does, she goes straight to hug him while he looks a little uncomfortable.

Darcy has been teasing him about customers not being able to steal from her shop because each item is cursed. The curse is removed only after they are purchased.

Ted has come to give Darcy Olin's glass eye.

Apparently, Olin was found dead, and although Ted wanted to crush the eye under his feet, Darcy had requested it.

Ted then tells her to press on the call bell, but Darcy declines, saying that it is haunted. She tells him that whoever has used it has died. Ted believes in science and logic, not superstition. He urges her to use it, and Darcy almost gives in to peer pressure but holds back. She takes the item at the back, where there are other oddities.

Look careful,y and you will spot the rabbit from the movie CAVEAT. There is also a wooden trunk that will come into play later.

Ted then tells her he has moved on and is dating Yana, a pharmaceutical rep. Darcy asks him how he could date her so soon, to which Ted replies that Yana was there for him when he was going through a rough period.

Ted leaves, and Darcy rushes home to use her psychic powers on the eye. She wants to see what Olin saw the night her sister died.

We see a few images, but they are not connected. Supposedly, Darcy has learned the truth of that night.

We then meet Yana, who feels a little insecure about living in the same house where Dani was murdered. She also finds Dani's camera and sees that most of the photos and videos were of her and Ted being all lovey-dovey.

Ted isn't too happy about seeing them, but Yana tells him she wants to show him something odd. Apparently, one of the photos shows Dani peeking through the darkness. Her eyes are white. Ted thinks it's a glitch, but Yana tells him she took this photo two nights ago.

Later, she tells Ted that a box has shown up and is from Darcy. Ted jokes that Darcy may be inside it, but Yana tells him that Darcy is right outside.

It is, in fact, Darcy who is standing and waiting for Ted to guide her in. Ted doesn't remember inviting her, but Darcy reminds her that he did tell her that she should come over sometime and so she chose the day of Dani's anniversary.

Ted tells her that he has to go for work and that Yana, too, has to go into the city. Darcy is unmoved as she says that no, she will stay.

They check out the contents of the box Darcy sent, and Yana is obviously disgusted.

Darcy then asks to go to the washroom while Yana makes a fuss. And then Ted leaves immediately. He didn't even have time to see Yana off.

Darcy exits from the bathroom, and Yana and her get talking. Yana wants to leave and starts to look for her keys but can't find them anywhere. When she returns inside the house, after unsuccessfully searching the car, she finds the wooden man who was in the box, now sitting at the head of the table.

Yana thinks it's a bizarre gift to give somebody, but Darcy is still very composed.

Yana believes that Darcy has taken her keys on purpose and gives up on her plans. She sits across from Darcy, and the conversation turns to Dani.

Darcy reveals she is a psychic and knows with complete surety that Olin did not kill Dani.

Yana is taken aback and asks who killed her then.

The scene cuts to Ted talking to the orderly called Ivan. There's a mental patient who has a muzzle on his face because he likes to bite people.

Yana calls up Ted and tells him that she doesn't like Darcy staying in the house. She also tells him that Darcy has given a name, Ivan, to the real murderer. Ted is taken aback but tells Yana that Darcy is deeply troubled and should be ignored.

Yana goes back, is startled to see the wooden man staring up at her, and drops her phone.

She goes downstairs and finds Darcy on the opposite side of the table from the wooden statue. She has her head bowed and is possibly sleeping.

Curious about the wooden man, she inspects it and finds holes in its head, along with a symbol. She brings out surgical scissors and removes odd objects from inside. There is a scroll of Dani and Darcy as kids, a lock of Darcy's hair, another photo of Dani and Darcy as adults, and a tube of blood.

Darcy calls out to her. She is standing and looking in her direction. She tells Yana to put everything back in. Yana wants an explanation but does as Darcy tells her to.

Yana then goes into the washroom, and the lights go off. She comes out but finds Darcy still in the same position. She snaps at Darcy when she asks her something and heads off to her room.

After changing, she gets into bed and looks at the pictures on Dani's camera.

Dani suddenly appears in the corner of the room, telling her to run.

Yana does exactly that. She goes downstairs, sees Darcy in the same position and checks the box again. Her keys are inside. She takes them and runs out, gets into the car and drives away. The entire house is plunged into darkness.

Ted talks to Ivan, and it is revealed that he was the one who sent the orderly to kill Dani.

Turns out that Ted wanted to leave Dani but was afraid she would take the house and all assets. So divorce was never an option. Ivan decides to kill Darcy so that their secret remains a secret.

ODDITY Ending Explained

Ted visits Darcy, who accuses him of killing her sister. He tells her she is deeply confused but that he is leaving the phone with her so that he can go check up on Ivan and then call her. He tells her to pick up the phone as soon as he calls.

Unknown to Darcy, Ted has removed the wooden board underneath, leaving a gap through which Darcy could fall. She does.

Ted calls from his office, and Darcy, trusting Ted, walks forward and falls down.

Ivan goes into the house to check on Darcy but finds the wooden man suddenly coming to life. Darcy is still breathing and says that they are connected. She's obviously talking about the wooden man.

He goes after Ivan, who freaks out and prefers jumping down the balcony rather than confronting it.

And so there goes his leg.

When he wakes up, he is under Ted's care, and his leg is all wrapped up. Ivan says he was chased by a demon. Ted tells him he burned down the wooden man and that he was never a threat.

Darcy has died too.

Ivan wants to confess to the priest and promises not to take Ted's name. But Ted doesn't want to take any chances. He uses the biter to chomp on Ivan.

Later, Ted is sitting at home. Yana has dumped him. He finds a package from Darcy's store and opens it to find the call bell from the beginning.

Ted decides to use it. He turns all around him but doesn't see anyone. But the point is that he did check, which means somewhere in his min,d he does believe something supernatural has occurred in his house.

He hears a creak but dismisses it. In the last shot, we see the decayed corpse of a bellhop standing beside him.

It looks more comical than scary.

The movie ends.

My Take On The Movie

Oddity is one of those movies that will want you to absorb every scene. You may feel bad for the twins who were victims and despise the man who claimed their lives, but it is a story well-told and well-executed.
