The Mouse Trap--My take on the movie with spoilers

Plot: On Alex's birthday, her friends surprise her at her job at the arcade centre. But their celebrations are cut short by a killer wearing Mickey's mask.

Quick Movie Review

Steamboat Willie's Mickey Mouse is in the public domain. Not the other versions of Mickey Mouse designed by Disney.

This is why this movie, which was initially titled Mickey's Mouse Trap, is now only The Mouse Trap.

Now, here's what you need to keep in mind when you watch this movie: It does not take itself seriously, which is why you don't need to, either.

It's not the perfect satire or parody. It's not an excellent slasher movie. It's just a movie where a person wearing a Mickey Mouse mask is going around killing people.

It actually didn't even have to be a Mickey Mouse mask. The Steamboat Willie version entered the public domain, and the makers just grabbed the design and used it.

At least in some of the short movies out there, the story is somewhat related to the Steamboat Willie version.

This movie is just entertainment that you should give a chance. You may just end up liking the complete absurdity of the concept and enjoy yourself.

In fact, the movie begins with a scrolling paragraph, much like in the beginning of Star Wars movies.

There, the makers explain how they did try to contact Disney but that they had nothing to do with them and didn't pick their calls.

That's just to show you the tone of their movie.

THE MOUSE TRAP Plot Summary

The movie begins with Detective Cole and Detective Marsh interrogating a girl called Rebecca, who is behind bars.

There was an incident at the arcade centre, and they want all the details of what transpired that night.

Rebecca is a Goth and not the least bit affected with what had happened or that her friends may be dead.

She goes on to narrate the events of the night.

Alex and Jackie are workers at the arcade centre and constantly approached by kids to sort out problems.

Alex is tending to a boy who asks if she has a boyfriend. She tells him that no, she doesn't and if he's asking her out. She thinks the boy has a crush on her. Except she is horribly wrong. The boy tells her she needs to date someone her own age and that she is pretty much a loser.

Alex is shocked to be rejected by a boy. Later, their boss Tim shows up and tells them to work hard and that the slushie machine needs to be cleaned out. Jackie jokes about not knowing it needed cleaning. Here's a warning for us: do not drink slushees, especially at arcade centres.

After he leaves, Jackie is on the phone while Alex is cleaning up the entire mess herself. Jackie asks Alex to watch her shift while she goes out to hang out with some guy. Alex agrees.

On the other side, Tim is watching videos on his projector and plays the Steamboat Willie video. He has a mask of Mickey as well. There's a short circuit, and Tim is compelled to reach for the mask.

After Jackie is gone, Alex is all alone and encounters a man in a Mickey mask. Before she can investigate further, she finds out that her friends have broken into the centre to celebrate her birthday. Which is in two weeks. One of her friend's birthday is before her.

Alex, nevertheless, goes along with it and enjoys her party because there are drinks involved, and she can finally legally drink.

Marcus is being his awkward self and makes it very obvious that he wants to ask Alex out but thinks she has a better chance with Ryan.

A couple goes off to have fun near the jungle gym and gets attacked by Mickey.

Ryan hits Alex, and she implies she may be of a different sexual orientation.  Ryan thinks that is why she isn't drooling over him.

Marcus tries his chance, and Alex pretty much tells him to ask her out. But they are interrupted by Marie, who has just witnessed the masked killer slash her friends.

Alex goes off to turn on the lights while Marie throws attitude at Marcus, who is slow to catch up on the fact that they need to call the police.

Alex uses the phone but hears someone say beep beep. Alex is perplexed because she believed that one of her friends had been wearing a disguise and trying to scare her.

But her friends quickly tell her that they wouldn't resort to such childish pranks.

Alex, Ryan, Marcus, and Marie decide to take down the killer themselves.

THE MOUSE TRAP Ending Explained with Spoilers

Rebecca is repeatedly interrupted by the police, who want to know how she could possibly know every single detail. She replies that one of her friends told her everything. The detectives are not convinced and ask her who told her, and she answers the dead one.

She goes back to telling the story. Rebecca was apparently playing laser tag all this time, which is why she isn't seen here yet.

Since these four are the only survivors, considering the rest were slaughtered, they believe that Tim is the one who is trying to kill them. Who also killed Alex's coworker at some point?

Anyway, the four discover that the Mouse is afraid of strobe lights because its supernatural powers come from electricity or something. They try to weaken the killer, but the lights do not work. Also, the killer keeps teleporting, even after the guys get him.

They think they've won, only to be surprised by his sudden return. He beheads Alex with a machete.

The scene is both shocking and hilarious because the guys are lamenting that they didn't get to go out with Alex.

And, surprise, surprise for us horror fans, Alex wasn't the final girl after all.

The detectives have nothing on Rebecca, but she is one of the suspects since she was at the crime scene, but not visible in any of the scenes. The detectives aren't buying that she was playing laser tag for such a long time.

During the end credits, we see Rebecca sitting in the cell when the door suddenly opens. A voice commands her to join him as their work has only begun.

The movie ends.

The Mouse Trap is not to be taken seriously and simply watch it for an enjoyable evening.
