Horror Movie News Update-- The Conjuring Last Rites

This is it, the end of the Conjuring franchise...or is it?

We were recently blessed with the first trailer for The Conjuring: Last Rites, which is apparently based on the Smurl family haunting that took place between 1974 and 1989.

The Smurl family consisted of Jack and Janet Smurl, their four daughters, Jack's parents, and their dog.

The family faced a strange phenomenon in their home where they reported smelled rotten odors, saw shadows, and were physically attacked.

Finally, in 1986, the Smurl family sought the help of Ed and Lorraine Warren, who claimed that the house was inhabited by four entities: an old woman, a man who died in the house, a troubled girl, and a strong demonic force.

The Warrens claimed that the entities were leaving messages for them to get out.

Unfortunately, for the Smurls, the Warrens were reportedly unable to solve their case. Later, they claimed that a round of blessings from a local pastor finally brought an end to the haunting. 

The Smurls did state that they saw shadows around 1987 but afterwards they declared that they were free from the haunting after they moved. No reports of any haunting was reported by the new tenants in the Smurl house.

In the trailer for The Last Rites, we see that Ed and Lorraine's daughter, Judy, is now a grown up and dating Tony Spera whom she will eventually marry, and who takes over the Warren's paranormal work after their retirement.

Ed and Lorraine are having a happy family dinner, when Lorraine notices a ghostly hand on Judy's shoulder.

Following that, we see the Smurl family experiencing a haunting at their home for which they call upon the Warrens. 

There are dolls levitating, scary old women, and young women crawling around like creepy creatures.

This could be the Warrens last case but the end of Conjuring? Probably not.

We see glimpses of Annabelle and The Crooked Man, so that's one crossover to consider.

In any sense, we may see Tony Spera solving paranormal cases or a prequel to the Conjuring.

The Conjuring: Last Rites releases on September 5th, 2025.
