Carved-- My Take on the Movie with Spoilers
Plot: A group of teens must face against a mutated pumpkin hellbent on killing everyone in their town.
Quick Movie Review
If you're planning to watch a movie with complex stories, intricate characterization, and the best showcase of acting skills, then watch something else.
CARVED is the kind of movie you will pick when you want to spend a relaxing night after a hectic day and don't want to use your brains at all.
It's the kind of movie that you go into with low expectations and find that you were exactly right in your assumptions.
Carved isn't a breakthrough horror movie. It's just there. Another movie that you can place under a horror category.
It isn't funny, but you may have some fun watching it depending on your tastes.
For me, Carved was one of those movies that was playing in the background while I attended to some other work. When it caught my attention every now and then, I realised that while I didn't dislike the movie, I was also not amazed by it.
It could have been more quirky or suspenseful, but it took the lazy route, and so we have a horror movie called Carved.
Also, Carved was once a short movie that was given the go-ahead to become a feature length.
It works so much better as a short.
Carved Movie Plot
The movie begins with someone getting attacked by the tendrils shooting from a pumpkin.
We then meet a group of kids, Kira, Cody, Trevor, Maddie, and others who are getting ready for a festival in town.
Clint, who runs a fried corn food truck, goes to a field to gather corn only to find a pumpkin growing there as well.
The pumpkin is weird looking and resembles the one that took a victim in the first scene.
Since there is also a pumpkin carving competition going on, Clint decides to pick it up for himself.
He drives into the town, and Trevor approaches him for some corn but is shooed away.
Trevor has a crush on Maddie, who is with Shane. Barb catches him ogling Maddie while she is performing, and he is clearly doing more than watching her play the flute.
During an interview by the local reporters, Cody lets it slip that he will be leaving the town. Kira feels betrayed because she thought they would be leaving the town together. She doesn't know how she will take care of Trevor all on her own.
The pumpkin carving contest begins, and Clint's friend Wes picks up the ugly pumpkin to carve.
But as soon as he picks up the knife, the pumpkin's tendrils shoot up and grab his wrist. Wes thinks he is tripping, but the pumpkin is actually defending itself from the carvers. It kills Wes and every other carver around it.
Chaos ensues.
Nothing much happens storywise except that people hide, Kira and Cody get into more relationship drama, and Maddie is assumed dead after she is pulled inside the barn.
Apart from Kira, Cody, and Trevor, everyone dies one by one.
CARVED Ending Explained
The killer pumpkin ends up having offspring. The trio finds them and uses one to lure the killer pumpkin.
As it caresses its offspring, the trio uses a crusher to get rid of the killer pumpkin.
After it is gone, the trio finds Maddie alive. She fended herself with herbicide she found in the barn. The four of them line up the pumpkin offsprings, and Kira drives a tractor over them.
In the end, there are pumpkins lined up as well as Clint's head. There is a tendril twirling and shooting out of his eye, implying that a pumpkin offspring much likely survived.
Sequel?
Probably.
The movie finally ends.
Final Thoughts On The Movie
Carved will not carve an impression, but like I said before, it manages to be the perfect companion on a boring day.
