Horror Movie News: SHELBY OAKS Coming this October
It’s easy to fall into the typical horror tropes when you’re writing a story, but when you claim to be different and then end up inserting the same tropes, you run into the risk of being hypocritical.
But let’s face it, sticking to the tried and tested tropes can be a safe bet when you’re venturing into the movie business and want your debut to be a hit with the audience.
That is what most reviewers have been saying about the soon-to-be-released SHELBY OAKS.
The movie is directed by Chris Stuckmann, who used to be a reviewer and author before he got the chance to direct his first feature film. The movie is backed by Mike Flanagan, who serves as executive producer alongside Trevor Macy and Melinda Nishioka.
Shelby Oaks is about a YouTuber, Riley, who, along with her friends, runs a series called The Paranormal Paranoids where they explore supposedly haunted places. When they venture into a town called Shelby Oaks, Riley’s three friends are murdered, and the tape that gets left behind shows Riley either being taken by a man or killed by him.
Her sister Mia searches for her for 12 years after she finds a second tape which shows that her sister may be alive and there is something sinister attached to her disappearance.
In the trailer, we find Mia opening the door to a man who hands her a tape before shooting himself in the head. Before killing himself, he says, “She finally let me go.”
Mia then watches the tape and believes her sister is alive. She goes in search of her and ends up in Shelby Oaks. She recalls how her sister used to tell her that a man kept watching her from the window.
Mia investigates the woods and comes across markings on the tree trunks and a black dog that watches her. A woman who lives in a cabin in the woods invites her in, but clearly she isn’t as hospitable as she appears to be.
Will Mia ever learn what happened to her sister? Will she make it alive out of the woods?
The movie stars Camille Sullivan, Brendan Sexton III, Michael Beach, Robin Bartlett, and Keith David.
Currently, the movie holds an 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes after premiering at the 28th Fantasia International Film Festival on July 20, 2024. It was also screened at the 25th FrightFest film festival on August 23, 2024.
NEON has acquired the worldwide distribution of Shelby Oaks which will release on October 3rd.
