Urban Legends: El Silbón (The Whistler)
Legend has it that a long time ago, there was a young man who possessed a violent temper. He was used to getting what he wanted, and if he didn’t, the people around him would suffer his wrath.
One day, his father took him hunting. The young man was craving venison and demanded his father catch a deer so he could have a feast. The father tried his best to catch a deer for his son, but the day wore out, and so did the older man. Exhausted, the father gave up on the hunt.
The young man was outraged. He wanted venison for dinner and nothing else. He ordered his father to continue the hunt, but he refused and told him that they would continue the search tomorrow.
The young man was not used to having his demands refused. In a fit of rage, he struck his father. He then used the hunting knife to stab him several times, and then cut out his organs.
Wrapping them in a cloth, he brought the organs to his mother and told her they belonged to an animal. She inquired about her father’s whereabouts, but the young man stated that his father had met with a friend and had gone to his house.
His mother cooked the organs, but soon realized that the organs didn’t appear to belong to an animal. Her heart sank when she came to a horrific conclusion: the organs belonged to a human being. And since her son had gone out alone with his father…
She went to her father-in-law and told him what she assumed happened to her father. The young man’s grandfather confronted his grandson. The grandson confirmed their suspicions. He told them that yes, since his father could not provide him with venison, he had punished him for his ineptitude.
His mother cursed him, and his grandfather grabbed the young man, tied him to a post, and whipped him. He then rubbed alcohol, salt, chilli peppers, and lime on his wounds so he could feel every bit of pain his father must have.
Then his grandfather made the young boy take him to where the father’s remains lay in the woods. He made the young man gather up all the bones in a sack and carry them into the woods, all alone.
It wasn’t long before the scent of his father’s remains and bones attracted the wild creatures, especially the dogs. The young man was viciously attacked and killed by rabid dogs.
However, the young man’s spirit found no peace and was cursed to roam the earth.
But death did not change his violent nature. While he was cursed to carry his father’s remains for the rest of eternity, he did not give up on his hunger to prey on victims.
As time passed, the locals believed they saw the young man roaming the woods. The curse altered his appearance so that he looked emaciated, with elongated limbs, and appeared to be twenty feet tall.
But the most disturbing part was that the specter emitted a whistle to announce his arrival. Allegedly, the wild dogs had attacked his throat, which is why the only sound he could now give out was an eerie whistle.
People started calling him The Whistler, El Silbón.
If the whistle sounds close, El Silbón is actually far away, and there's no immediate danger.
If the whistle sounds distant, El Silbón is nearby, and you are in grave danger.
El Silbón picks on anyone who happens to come his way. He picks on drunkards, lazy people, and womanizers.
The only way to protect yourself from El Silbón? People swear that the specter is still afraid of dogs, and the sound of barking sends him away. Additionally, keeping garlic and a whip with you also helps. The punishment inflicted by his grandfather still affects him and sends fear into him.
El Silbón is not just another creepy legend, but a reminder to always treat your parents with respect or suffer the consequence of being cursed for eternity and existing as a restless spirit.
