Return to Silent Hill Coming January 2026
This town is full of monsters. Welcome back to Silent Hill. While we wait for the upcoming Silent Hill games, the filming of the new movie in the franchise has already been filmed and slated for a release next year.
RETURN TO SILENT HILL is the adaptation of the second game in the franchise.
In the game, James Sunderland receives a letter from his late wife Mary who had passed three years ago. He ventures into the town called Silent Hill where he meets a woman called Maria who bears an uncanny resemblance to his late wife. He also meets an eight-year-old girl called Laura, whom he takes under his wing.
Along the way, Jay encounters the horrors of Silent Hill, especially the dreaded Pyramid Head. The monster is basically a man with a head of a large metallic pyramid with sharp edges.
Towards the end of the game, spoiler alert, it is revealed that Silent Hill actually represents James’s psyche as he processes his guilt from smothering his wife. He had been frustrated with their lack of intimacy and the tired of taking care of her as she battled her illness.
The game has multiple endings. In one ending, he manages to leave the town with Laura. In another, he commits suicide. Other options include James leaving with Maria, who is now contagious, and in some joke endings, James is abducted by extraterrestrials, or finds out that a dog, a Shiba In,u has been controlling the events of the game.
Naturally, the movie is less likely to pick any of the joke endings. Imagine how many horror fans would be pissed off if they watch the entire movie only to find out that in the end it was all a dream-like scenario, controlled by a dog!
The first teaser of RETURN TO SILENT HILL has been released and it shows Jeremy Irvine as James Sunderland, who wakes up in a puddle of water. There’s a flash of scenes where he is watching TV and the white light emitting from it causes him to have an episode.
We then get only a brief flash of scenes where there are slithering monsters, creepy figures walking by, a house on fire, and James entering Silent Hill.
Right before the teaser ends, we see a sword being dragged against concrete. It’s none other than Pyramid Head, ready to attack James.
Following that, a trailer was released offering us a glimpse of a world that is really made of nightmares. The trailer is honestly nightmare fuel.
We see James read a letter from Mary, asking him to come back to their special place, as something has happened. James immediately makes a decision to travel and ends up in Silent Hill, a town which seems to be abandoned and encased in snow.
As he runs about looking for answers, he encounters the monstrous creatures that he has supposedly awakened, namely the Pyramid Head. But that’s not all, there are several contorting faceless beings that haunt him, and at some point, he is lured by bony hands.
The trailer ends with: You Live Here Now.
No, thanks.
While the trailer shows off some really unhinged, scary stuff, the faceless creatures are obviously in costume, and you can make out the ripples in fabric.
Nevertheless, fans of the game will certainly enjoy it. Or be pissed that it doesn’t capture the true essence of the game. Only time will tell.
The previous two movies in the series may have had an average performance at the box office, but received primarily negative reviews from critics.
Christophe Gans returns to direct this movie after the first one. Along with Jeremy Irvine, the movie also stars Hannah Emily Anderson as Mary and Evie Templeton as Laura.
RETURN TO SILENT HILL will release on January 23rd, 2026.
