Horror Movie Spotlight--A24 Acquires distribution rights to undertone
There are a lot of movies that are declared as the scariest movie of all time, or of the year, or of the decade.
But how many can claim the title of THE SCARIEST MOVIE YOU’LL EVER HEAR?
We may be only in the first quarter of the year, but do we have a winner yet? Can the scariest movie we will ever hear also be the scariest movie of the year?
Acquired by A24, UNDERTONE has already had its premiere at the 29th Fantasia International Film Festival on July 27th 2025. It is now looking at a March 13th release.
Early reviews have been positive with the lead Nina Kiri being praised for her performance. The movie has even won the gold audience award for Canadian Films.
Two trailers for UNDERTONE have dropped, each of them an auditory nightmare.
We see Evy who runs a paranormal podcast called the undertone with her partner Justin. Evy is the skeptic while Justin is the believer. They take on real-life paranormal experiences and dissect it.
Justin has a new topic. They have just received an anonymous email with 10 audio recordings. At first, it seems like random whisperings and noises until the audio is played in reverse.
The clock strikes 3 and Evy gets creeped out, even mentioning that they need to stop listening. Doors open, lights flash, and Evy’s ailing mother slowly rises.
As the first trailer ends, we hear a woman say that Evy should not have called out to her. It is what she wants. The trailer ends with a staticy ominous version of Baa Baa Black Sheep.
The second trailer makes use of even more creepy audio tracks. We see creepy drawings, then those drawings scribbled all over the house walls and staircase. At the end of the trailer, Evy is told that she shouldn’t have listened to all of them. It is what she wants.
The question is, who is she?
Interestingly, the trailer only focuses on Evy and not any other character. Based on reviews, the story is perhaps told only through Evy’s experiences. We get to experience what Evy experiences although we may be seeing things happening around her that she is not aware of just yet.
As per sources, the film follows Evy Babic, a professional skeptic who co-hosts a paranormal podcast called The Undertone. Strained by the heavy emotional responsibility of providing end-of-life care for her dying, comatose mother, Evy’s only escape is her nightly recording sessions with her co-host, Justin.
The plot kicks into gear when Justin receives an anonymous email containing ten mysterious audio recordings. The tapes chronicle the lives of a young pregnant couple, Jessa and Mike, who are being tormented by an unseen presence in their home. The recordings capture the couple's increasing terror, including strange sleep-talking and unexplained noises that seem to follow a rhythmic, ritualistic pattern.
As Evy and Justin analyze the files for their show, the "haunted" audio begins to bleed into Evy’s physical reality. She discovers unsettling parallels between the couple’s experiences and her own life, leading to a terrifying realization: by listening to the tapes, she may have invited the same malevolent force into her home. Isolated and vulnerable, Evy must decide if the sounds she hears through her headphones are just recordings or something waiting for her in the shadows of her mother's house.
Written and directed by Ian Tuason in his feature directorial debut, the film stars Nina Kiri as Evy Babic, Adam DiMarco as Justin (Evy’s podcast co-host), Michèle Duquet as Evy's mother, and Keana Lyn Bastidas and Jeff Yung as Jessa and Mike, the pregnant couple featured in the mysterious audio files.
