Horror Movie Spotlight: The Mortuary Assistant (2026)

 

Based on the 2022 hit horror video game, THE MORTUARY ASSSISTANT  is releasing this week.

The horror story has multiple endings depending on the choices the player makes.

The story begins in 1998 with Rebecca arriving at the mortuary to work with her former mentor Raymond.

Rebecca gets rattled due to some unusual circumstances, after which she is sent home. However, late at night, Raymond calls her back to work.

As soon as she arrives, Raymond locks her inside, claiming that a demon has attached itself to her. She must use a ritual to bind the Demon to a cadaver and incinerate the body. The player must then try to find the right cadaver to do so.

Throughout all this,  Rebecca experiences strange hallucinations all tied to her sorrowful past. Her mother had passed away due to a drug overdose, and Rebecca had almost done the same. Only her father had intervened at the last minute. Unfortunately, her father died trying to save her, and Rebecca has held guilt for it ever since.

Raymond offers advice throughout, telling her that the Demon will try to trick her and that she must continue her work at the mortuary to keep the Demon away.

During the night, Rebecca learns of a woman being kept in the basement, called Valery, whom Raymond visits to draw blood from, since it is supposed to be used for the binding ritual.

Eventually, Rebecca realizes she needs to come to terms with her father's death in order to move on and avoid the demon's manipulation.

Rebecca then tries to banish the Demon in Valery, but the ritual fails. Raymond is shown to have a sigil, which seems to destroy Valery. Part of his sigil is burned away once she is gone.

Rebecca leaves after blaming Raymond for keeping secrets.

In the end, Raymond is seen approaching another woman, his mother, from whom he takes a piece of flesh to fix his sigil so he can continue his fight against demons.

There are multiple endings of the game:

​1. The Standard Ending (Correct Body)

If you correctly identify the demon, mark the correct body, and burn it. This is the successful completion of a standard shift, where Raymond then offers you a full-time position.

​2. The Possession Ending (Incorrect Body)

You get this ending after you burn the wrong body, use incorrect sigils, or fail to place the mark in time. Rebecca becomes possessed and brutally murders Raymond.

3. The Basement Ending (Valery)

In this ending, after using the keypad code, you discover Valery, the woman Raymond is keeping in the basement. Finish the shift correctly to trigger a conversation about her.

4. The Closure Ending (Father)

After collecting the sobriety coins and necklace from Rebecca's apartment and the mortuary, you need to place the items on her father's body. Successfully burning the correct body afterward grants Rebecca peace with her past.

​5. The Game Over Ending

 If you take too long to complete your tasks, the possession meter fills up completely, resulting in an immediate failure and a "Game Over" screen.

​6. The Six Figures Ending

Once you find all six hidden white ghost figures scattered throughout the mortuary and hallucinations, complete the shift normally after interacting with all of them.

​7. Raymond’s Secret (2023 Update Ending)

 This "True" ending requires using a fuse to fix the bathroom fuse box and a hammer to break into the second basement room. It reveals the dark truth that Raymond is using the possessed, mutilated body of his mother, Audrey, to create his protective sigils.

8. The "Shut Out" Ending (Definitive Edition)

 Triggered by attempting to leave the mortuary or repeatedly sabotaging the ritual. In this ending, Raymond decides you are a liability and locks you in a coffin to be left for the demon.

The movie trailer for The Mortuary Assistant has dropped and shows Willa Holland play Rebecca, who is embalming a patient.

Paul Sparks plays Raymond, who advises her that the Demon will do anything to get control of her. In order to get rid of it, she needs to learn its name.

Rebecca deals with crawling bodies in the dark, smiling cadavers, and people banging on windows.

We see her running around quite a bit and see her getting trapped in the incinerator, even.

Can Rebecca make it out alive?

Written by Tracee Beebe and Brian Clarke, the film is directed by Jeremiah Kipp and stars Willa Holland as Rebecca Owens and Paul Sparks as Raymond Delver, featuring a supporting cast that includes Mark Steger as The Mimic, Shelly Gibson as Grandma, and Keena Ferguson as Kelly.

The movie is distributed by Shudder.

THE MORTUARY ASSISTANT releases on February 13th and then on VOD/Streaming on March 27th on Shudder.
