Horror Movie Spotlight-- Curry Barker's OBSESSION drops a new trailer!

The trailer for OBSESSION is finally here.

For those who have been following the YouTube channel “that’s a bad idea” and fans of Curry Barker and Cooper Tomilson, this will be one of the most-awaited horror movies of the year for you.

The comedic duo is popular for the unhinged videos that place them in situations of comedic exasperation and perplexing real-life scenarios. The duo has been making comedy videos for years before venturing into horror comedy.

Milk & Serial was written and directed by Curry Barker and made on a budget of $800. Styled as a found-footage movie, the story was about a prank that goes horribly wrong. Leave it to Barker and Tomilson, who both starred in this, to inject humor in the most dire situations.

Milk & Serial’s popularity, along with The Chair (another short movie written and directed by Curry Barker) was probably what got production houses to finally notice talent and new in new horror projects.

And so, here we have it: Obsession.

The movie has already made its premiere at the TIFF, where it won rave reviews, leading to Focus Features and Blumhouse coming on board as distributors.

Made on a budget of $1 million. OBSESSION currently holds a rating of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes

Based on these positive reviews, Curry Barker has already been signed on by Blumhouse to write and direct a horror movie called ANYTHING BUT GHOSTS. Cooper Tomlinson shares writing credit, too.

So, while we wait for more updates on ANYTHING BUT GHOSTS, let’s take a look at the latest trailer for OBSESSION.

Now we all know that the story has been inspired by MONKEY’S PAW, and Curry Barker has stated that the story came to him while watching a Simpsons episode based on the classic.

In the trailer, we see a young man called Bear who has a crush on his childhood friend and co-worker, Nikki. His friend Ian asks him if he has ever flirted with her, and then gives Bear tips on asking Nikki to grab a drink sometime.

Bear drops Nikki off at home and fumbles with the line, awkwardly.

In the car, Bear looks at the box called One Wish Willow

He cracks it and makes his wish that Nikki Freeman loves him more than anyone in the entire world.

You know what they say about being careful what you wish for…

Nikki abruptly shows up at his car window, tapping.

As she proclaims that she loves him so, so much, we see Bear and Nikki watching a movie together, but Nikki keeps turning and looking at him. Bear turns her chin back to the TV.

Uh-oh, he got his wish, and he’s already over her?

Bear’s other coworker thinks it's weird that he is now dating Nikki, and he gets uncomfortable because, apparently, she is out of his league.

We see Nikki following Bear everywhere and staring at him.

At a friend's gathering, Nikki says something weird about true love being conjured only through breaking the branch of a willow tree. She also laughs uncontrollably for a long time at something that is not so funny. Bear gets embarrassed as his friends turn to look at him.

The following scenes show Nikki with a tattoo on her chest, her demanding to know why Bear doesn’t love her, and him being coerced to say that he is.

Nikki clearly doesn’t love him. She’s obsessed with him.

In the last scene of the trailer, Bear desperately calls a number, asking if there is a way to cancel his wish. The voice on the other end sounds like Curry Barker himself, reminding him that he can’t help him with a refund and that he is stuck with it forever. Correction, until he dies, of course. Then he abruptly cuts the line, leaving a frantic Bear.

The trailer does a good job of building excitement for this movie that mixes horror and sarcastic wit.

Written, directed, and edited by Curry Barker, the film stars Michael Johnston and Inde Navarrette, with a supporting cast featuring Andy Richter, Megan Lawless, and Cooper Tomlinson.

OBSESSION releases on May 15th.
