Horror Movie Spotlight--FORBIDDEN FRUITS
A trio of friends and witches, inducting an outsider in their group? Where have we seen that before?
The Craft, of course. The 1996 movie that was not only a sleeper hit but over the years have become a cult classic. The movie was about three girls in high school who were reportedly witches. A new girl displays some powers which the others notice and get her to join them.
The four of them perform a ritual to get what they truly want, which naturally backfires and causes chaos. In the end, the new girl turns out to be the one who still wields power while the others have lost them.
The recent trailer for FORBIDDEN FRUITS seems to follow the same pattern, although many have commented that there seems to be MEAN GIRLS thrown into the mix as well.
The story is based on “Of the Women Came the Beginning of Sin, and Through Her We All Die” by Lily Houghton.
The trailer, at first glance, is bizarre and the characters seem unhinged. Apart from the cast, the movie does not look impressive at all. However, given that it is produced by Diablo Cody, we can expect campy horror fun.
In the trailer, we see Apple, Cherry, and Fig as saleswomen at Free Eden who may be stealing expensive clothes from the store.
Enter Pumpkin into the fruit salad. She meets up with Apple, who at first seems to know her and then invites her to hang out with them tonight.
Pumpkin notices the bracelets and the fruits, and seems hesitant because, naturally, their group seems corny. But the scene shifts, and Pumpkin has accepted the invitation. They have a ritual and a small party, and all of this clearly looks like a cult of some sort.
Pumpkin then runs into Cherr,y making out with someone, and pleads with her to keep it a secret from Apple. The friendship soon begins to fall apart under secrets and lies. Cherry and Fig may not approve Apple’s leadership after all.
Pumpkin undertakes the leadership role when things begin to fall apart, causing Apple to freak out.
There’s blood and lots of screaming. Can these four mend their friendship, or will one of them be ousted?
Written by Lily Houghton and Meredith Alloway, this horror-comedy is directed by Alloway in her feature directorial debut and features a cast led by Lili Reinhart as Apple, Victoria Pedretti as Cherry, Alexandra Shipp as Fig, and Lola Tung as the newcomer Pumpkin, alongside Emma Chamberlain as Pickle and Gabrielle Union as Sharon.
