Horror Movie News: M3GAN Spinoff SOULM8TE Gets A Release Date
But instead we got M3GAN 2.0 in 2025, which pivoted from its original horror premise and turned into a sci-fi action thriller.
SOULM8TE brings the horror back into the franchise.
What Is SOULM8TE about?
Following the death of his wife, David buys an android to cope with the loss. He is also an engineer who then re-programs the android to be more sentient, which unleashes mayhem.
SOULM8TE Trailer Breakdown
An android is delivered to David’s house. The android, like any doll, comes with three outfits: sundress, apron, nightclub dress, and schoolgirl.
David is appalled by the last suggestion. Apparently, the new android isn’t considered to be just any companion. And based on the above options, it’s no surprise that we will see the android wearing the nightclub dress more often in the movie than any other.
The android called Sara begins to do housework around the house, but when David asks her to perform a task, she refuses, saying it is not possible for her. Naturally, androids come with limitations, and that too for a reason.
But David thinks Sara has the capability to do much more, so he adds just one little code in her, a code in red that says self-directed. And all so that he could enjoy a genuine human experience.
Sara is shocked to see herself in the mirror after being reprogrammed. It’s as if she’s trying to understand who she really is.
She also becomes obsessed with David. Of course, we see her in a nightclub dress and trying to entice David with her performance. Later, she tells David she loves him. He’s obviously shocked. Perhaps he intended his soulmate to only be interested in doing housework.
She demands he tells her he loves her too. David…hesitates.
Sara begins to watch him when he sleeps, and interferes in his relationships with humans.
We see Sara pick herself up from the floor a lot, slam car hoods on people’s hands, and direct mean girl insults to women.
When one of David’s friends/girlfriends gets too close to him, Sara throws wine on her face before telling her she doesn’t care much for feminism.
Is SOULM8TE The New "Obsession"?
Following the success of OBSESSION, which released this year and is currently the highest-grossing horror movie, it’s no surprise that Blumhouse decided to dig up SoulM8te, which was considered almost shelved at one point.
The similarities are almost obvious, especially when Sara demands that David tell her that he loves her, much like when Nikki asks Bear.
SoulM8te probably doesn’t offer anything new in terms of premise. There have been several movies in the past where androids go rogue. But it’s the season of obsessive love, and so SoulM8te may just make the cut.
