Mike Flanagan to Adapt Stephen King’s The Mist
Mike Flanagan is at it again! After previously adapting Gerald's Game, The Life of Chuck, and Doctor Sleep, the filmmaker is keen to adapt yet another Stephen King novel: The Mist.
The Mist was one of Stephen King's novellas originally published in the anthology Skeleton Crew. It was adapted into a movie in 2007, and critics, as well as King himself, praised it for its gut-wrenching climax.
The story follows a father and son who go to the grocery store with their neighbor, only to find a mysterious mist forming all around them. The other townsfolk are caught up in it as well, and after an incident where someone is pulled into the fog, the threat is realized: there is something in the mist.
One citizen is overly religious and believes they must offer the mist a sacrifice in order to be spared. The town becomes divided, with some planning to escape while others want to sacrifice one of their own for the threat to go away.
The short story ends with the father and son escaping and finding the town in ruins. In the distance, they hear military sirens and understand that help is arriving. The movie, however, takes a different turn. Realizing they cannot escape the monsters, the father decides to mercy-kill the survivors and then himself. He even kills his son to protect him from a gruesome death, but right before he can turn the gun on himself, the mist begins to lift. Help has arrived, and the father is devastated to learn that had he waited a few more minutes, his son would be alive. Or was the religious lady right all along? Did the sacrifice work? It’s an ending that gives the terrifying story a shocking twist; the father must live with the guilt of killing his son.
The Mist was also adapted into a TV series, but it changed the story to focus more on people being haunted by their guilt rather than real monsters. The show was canceled after one season.
Mike Flanagan is currently in the post-production stage of Carrie, one of King’s most notable horror novels. It will be interesting to see Flanagan's take on the story; Carrie is set to release in late 2026 on Amazon Prime Video, marking Flanagan’s first project with Amazon after his departure from Netflix.
There is a certain poignancy in Flanagan’s horror that touches the audience. Family bonds may be stretched in his stories, but they are never broken. The Mist, under Flanagan's leadership at Warner Bros., will likely focus more on the bond between father and son. There will be plenty of horror scenes and perhaps even a touching monologue. Most importantly, we are bound to see some of the usual cast members Flanagan employs in his projects.
The Mist will be an ambitious project for sure, but it is nothing Mike Flanagan cannot capably handle.
