Demonic (2021)--My take on the movie with spoilers!

PLOT SUMMARY: When Carly is presented with an opportunity to contact her comatose mother, she finds herself in a terrifying situation and learns that her mother is actually possessed.

Remember when the Sims games came out? How much fun was it creating characters and dressing them, and giving them careers? And then we had to design homes and furnish them...and then give them social lives. Basically, make them do all the things we won't necessarily do in real life.

These games were used for entertainment purposes. Who knew simulation games could also be used to tap into memories of coma patients and help with exorcisms?

Demonic has an interesting premise but the weak execution takes out all the fun and robs it of its potential to be a solid horror movie.

DEMONIC Movie Plot

Carly is approached by her friend Martin one day who informs her about her estranged mother Angela being in an asylum and in a coma. She is told that she is being asked to come in and help with waking up her mother.

A backstory reveals that Angela had gone berserk one fine day and began cutting ravens and staring into space. Then she went completely mad and had to be taken away. Carly hasn't seen her in almost twenty years and so jumps at the opportunity to go see her when Martine tells her that the institute where she is at is actively searching for her.

Once Carly makes it over there, it isn't long before she's convinced to partake in an experimental treatment wherein she will be sent into her mother's mind to figure out why she's not waking up.

Cue disjointed graphics and pale sceneries straight out of horror video games. She sees a large house and her mother just sitting around and telling her she never asked for her and she needs to go before "it" showed up.

Carly relays this to the doctors who convince her to go on another mind trip. This time she encounters something demonic and her arm cuts open. The doctors manage to pacify her when she freaks out and she goes home.

DEMONIC Ending Explained with spoilers!

It is then revealed that the doctors at the institute aren't ordinary but exorcists who were actually trying to find the source of Angela's possession.

Martin is the one who fills in the blanks to the story of the large house Carly saw and how it is ground zero for demons and how they were trying to get Angela to stay there.

Carly now believes her mother wasn't crazy after all and was possessed and must be saved.

Just like in a videogame, when Carly reaches the haunted house that was once her childhood home, she finds the exorcists are on the losing side and it is up to her to defeat the demon.

She puts herself back in the simulation as the exorcists had brought all of the equipment there. She meets her mother who is upside down and bids her farewell. Angela dies and Carly must combat the demon who has set fire to the car killing Martin.

The demon becomes eager to possess Carly and manages to get inside her before she stabs herself with the special dagger one of the priests gave her. The demon has no use for a corpse and leaves.

Carly is shown later to have survived her own stabbing and placing flowers on her mother's grave.

Demonic could have been a fun, scary movie because of its videogame theme and graphics. It could have been a delight for gamers who play games regardless of the glitches. But the movie is set back because of its numerous potholes and the lack of reasoning.

Carly is supposed to be a rebel with her purple hair and indifferent attitude, however, she easily gives in to whatever people expect out of her. Martin tells her to go see her mother whom she hasn't met for so many years, the doctors convincing her to use a simulation, her eagerness to put herself in danger in the end...all of it doesn't make sense for her character.

Carly seems hardly a protagonist but a puppet who is easily influenced by her environment.

The fact that the movie relies heavily on the protagonist who is quite weak, doesn't help to keep the attention rooted.

And so, Demonic comes off as a boring movie that you can just play in the background while doing anything else.
