The Final Wish — My take on the movie with spoilers!
PLOT SUMMARY: After his father's death, Aaron finds an urn that grants him wishes. But the wishes come at a blood price and he must be careful not to make the seventh and final wish or else his soul will belong to a jinn.
The first thing that comes to your mind as you watch this movie is: "Hey, didn't I see this movie before? The story seems familiar. Two years ago, wasn't there a movie with a similar theme... About a high school girl who comes across a mysterious item that grants her all her wishes?"
You will be right. The Final Wish is just like Wish Upon, only less entertaining and more ridiculous.
The thing is, Wish Upon made you sort of care about a girl whose mother passed away when she was a kid. She was being bullied at school, and to top it all, to her mortification, her father was collecting junk from trash right in front of her school!
So yes, she definitely needed those wishes.
And another thing: Their wish-granting box looked better.
THE FINAL WISH Movie Plot
The Final Wish is about Aaron, a guy you don't really come to like. He's late on his rent, can't find a job as a lawyer, broke up with his girlfriend Lisa, and ignores his parents.
One day, when Lisa calls him to inform him of his father's passing, Aaron immediately visits his mother but tells her he can't stay for long.
Now, Aaron's father was an antique collector and he has an ugly looking urn. Of all the things, Aaron picks that to keep in his bedroom after his attempt to sell it and other antiques, fails after his mother denies him the right to touch his father's belongings.
When Aaron receives a phone call asking for rent, he makes a wish. "I wish I had three thouand dollars."
Boom. He wins the lotto of five thousand dollars. He meets his childhood friend Jeremy who tells him that his ex Lisa is dating Derek, an abusive guy who is hitting her.
At this point, Aaron decides he wants Lisa back.
At night, when the neighbor's dog is barking, he opens the window to scream "I wish you would just shut up!"
Not just, shut up. Nope, he says "I wish..."
I honestly couldn't think of a scenario where anyone would speak that way unless they knew they were standing next to a genie.
Anyway, the next day the dog is dead. Aaron begins to get afraid that his wishes are coming true but isn't sure yet.
He meets with Lisa, asks her about Derek hitting her to which she asks him to stay away.
Aaron makes another wish. He wishes he were more handsome.
Boom. Wish granted. Except the blood price is him being hit by a car by his best friend.
He requires plastic surgery and when the bandages come off everyone is impressed with his new look. Personally, I couldn't see much of a difference. Except his hairstyle changes a bit.
His mother is ecstatic to see her "handsome boy", especially when he tells her he will be staying longer. He thinks maybe the town is lucky for him.
Aaron makes more wishes, asks for his father to be brought back and when he sees his father the way he was buried, dancing with his mother, he freaks out and goes to find Jeremy, who by the way has been dead all this time.
Aaron decides to launch an investigation and finds out that the ugly urn is what is granting him wishes. He finds out that a man had it in his possession before and went crazy, and killed his wife. He blames it all on the box.
THE FINAL WISH Ending Explained with Spoilers!
Aaron finds out that there is a jinn in the urn and that he must not make a seventh wish or his soul would belong to the jinn.
But circumstances force him to make more wishes. He wishes Derek would get out of the way. But before he does, Lisa is accidentally killed.
Aaron stands in disbelief while the jinn screams in his ear.
He makes the seventh wish: that he had died in the car accident instead of getting plastic surgery that didn't do much except add a philtrum above his lip. Was that what was different about him? Did his face get slimmer? I really couldn't tell the difference.
So anyway, Aaron dies. But uh oh, he wakes up in his bed, from a supposed dreamlike in the previous scene. He looks at himself in the mirror, waves and is relieved. Then opens his eyes and freaks. There is no one on the bed. He's the one inside the mirror.
Outside, his mother is happily selling off the antiques because she wants to move away. Lisa is given the box to show the continuation and a possibility of a sequel which I hope doesn't happen.
The movie was childish in many aspects. The horror scenes were funny and unlike Final Destination (the movie was from the creators of Final Destination) the scenes didn't give you an uneasy feeling.
Like for example when the neighbor trips over in the rain, falls on a tree branch stub and has another branch fall on him, stabbing him. That seemed pure ridiculous. At least in the final destination movies, you feel that a few incidents could be possible.
I'm still having second thoughts about sitting on a roller coaster.
Watch the movie only if you are a fan of Lin Shaye. I am and I watched it and felt bad for an actress whose talent was wasted in a mediocre movie.

ReplyDeleteHis ex-girlfriend was a piece of trash as well. I didn’t care about anyone in this shitty film.
ReplyDeleteNot a horror film fan but actually enjoyed this movie. Some of the characters where so formula that i thought it was an intentional in-joke (the black friend, the abusive sheriff). I would watch the leading man actor again (looks up his name !)
ReplyDeleteThis movie could have been better lol oh well.
ReplyDeleteYou forgot the wish where he made his mom crazy by wishing she was happy
ReplyDeleteAlso all I noticed after his plastic surgery was that they changed his hair and put eyeliner on him 🤣
ReplyDeleteWishing he were dead but ends up in a mirror. That's ridiculus. Still a good watch but not while playing speed chess.
ReplyDeleteHumorously, your review interchanges 'the box' with 'the urn' in several places, inadvertantly pointing out how painfully derivative this movie is of 'Wish Upon'
ReplyDeleteI thought his mom died of hanging? Why is she alive at the end? And lisa died. Why is she alive at the end?
ReplyDeleteI just watched "The Final Wish" on Peacock. It was very strange, weird, didn't get the ending. I thought his mother hung herself & his girlfriend got shot. Some of It didn't make much sense to me...
